About the Artist

Jacky Lansley – Choreographer

Jacky Lansley is a choreographer and film maker and has been practicing for more than three decades; she forged her unique style from a rigorous training in both classical work with the Royal Ballet Company and in the radical, conceptual worlds of Performance Art and New Dance practice with collaborators including Sally Potter, Rose English, Richard Alston, Fergus Early, Hugo Glendinning, Mary Fulkerson; and in theatre as a choreographer on projects with The Women’s Playhouse Trust, The Manchester Royal Exchange and The Bristol Old Vic. The artist's choreography combines visual and theatrical disciplines and is concerned with space and the site specific; she has made works in many different kinds of indoor and outdoor environments and one of her most recent projects View from the Shore, which premiered at The Hall for Cornwall, was inspired by the Cornish coastal landscape with which she has had a long term special relationship. In 2008 her new work Standing Stones premiered at York Minster and toured to 14 UK cathedrals. The artist was a founder of UK's major independent dance studios, X6 Dance Space and Chisenhale Dance Space and in 2002 she founded the Dance Research Studio, which has supported the making of more recent works including: Holding Space (2004 Clore Studio, The Royal Opera House, London); Floor (2004 Chisenhale Dance Space); View From the Shore & Anamule Dance (2007 HFC and The Clore Studio, Royal Opera House); a short narrative dance film The Life Class (March 2008 London premier – The Horse Factory); and Standing Stones (2008 for 15 major UK cathedrals). Alongside her practice Jacky Lansley is a highly experienced teacher and guest lectures at a variety of institutions; she is Artistic Director of the Dance Research Studio, London, where she will direct a new modular programme - The Speaking Dancer: Interdisciplinary Performance Training - commencing February 2009 (www.jackylansley.com for further details); she is an Associate Artist with the Hall for Cornwall, Truro, and an Associate Lecturer at Plymouth University.
